“ Fish, out from water 2007 ”
I was called for this session by producer/pianist Janny
Choi.
Korean singer, FISH has a beautiful voice, writes nice music and plays really
good guitar. I kept telling him that he didn't need me for the session because
he played so well. But he insisted. Even though he spoke very little English
we had a nice rapport. It was a great session with bassist,
Nelson Braxton and drummer, Chris Miller. He
had other guitar players on this session, Ken
Harrill and Yuji Tojo. Ken and Yuji are great players!
On the pieces that I play on, I'm using my old SadaoYari classical guitar and
soloing on my Chapin nylon string "Eagle" guitar. I
think the instruments are a nice combination.
On 2)#5 and 3)#8 Fish is also playing guitar.

Recorded at Open Path Music studios. Gary Mankin and Scott Sorkin, engineers. I played on some pieces and helped Gordon, Scott, and Lee with some of the production.
Sound Samples: Tim Volpicella
I used sound samples that I made myself and some that we made here at
Open Path Music.
A toy piano, a breath before blowing into a trumpet. A stick dragged through sand, music stand, a plastic water bottle, various wind flutes and a sample of Hafez Modierzadeh playing a
Persian instrument called a Karne. Hafez did not play an overdub to this piece. I took his playing sample and added it to the piece. This is what I really love about samples and electronic music.
It’s creating music in a different way! I think it’s pretty amazing what can be done.
Peking Duck Soup Opera
From_Rocks_To_Horns
Guess what samps I used? The only live playing was me overdubing a guitar solo.
“All The Things You Dream” David Sharpe DS001
David came to Open Path Music to do a children’s album. I did most of the arranging, playing and production.
Scott Sorkin and Lee Ray helped in playing, production, engineering, and mixing. This was the most fun project I have done so far. David is such
a great person to be around. He really cares about kids learning and having fun. It was a great pleasure to work with him.

I always like playing music with Kris. She plays great lines, listens and interacts with the band.
Scott Sorkin not only engineered some of the session. He also played some great guitar on it.

“Fat Rose And Squeaky” Movie (If you go to this site, we did not do the trailer music.) Starring Cicely Tyson and Louise Fletcher.
Music By: Open Path Music (Gordon Stevens, Scott Sorkin, Lee Ray, Tim Volpicella)
We had two weeks in which to score this movie. We worked our asses off! We really worked as a team. I’m very proud at what we accomplished.
We used some of Gordon’s original music. Denny Berthiaume did a wonderful job at improvising Gordon’s themes. I arranged some instruments around Denny’s improvising and wrote a couple of cues. Scott Sorkin wrote a beautiful opening theme and some cues. And Lee Ray wrote some beautiful cues using samples and acoustic instruments.
Recorded and mixed at Open Path Music studios. Scott Sorkin, Gary Mankin engineering
We could not have done it without the help of some fine musicians.
Denny Berthiaume - Piano
Renata Bratt - Cello
Kristen Strom - Woodwinds,
Carole Mayedo - Viola,
Joe Bonfiglio Clarinet.

“The Stars Are All In Heaven” Kristina Forester (Unreleased)
Recorded and mixed at Open Path Music studios.
I worked with Kristina in Gordon’s Stevens band, Departure. She’s a very talented cellist/ composer/ vocalist. I thought her music
was very interesting. We started on the project, but never finished it.
Walls
I co-arranged with Lee Ray. Lee came up with some great keyboard sounds. I used a middle eastern wind instrument sample called a “Karna”
for the one of the keyboard sounds. For the rhythm sounds before the drums come in. I used an old Roland bass synth.
“through the trees” Departure OPM 5001-8

This recording opened up a new interest for me. I had never written words to music before. Writing words was foreign to me and still
is. It’s hard man! I have such respect for anyone who can write. Recorded and mixed at Open Path Music

“Still Waters” Catherine Seidel OPM 5001-6
I like to call Catherine’s music “New Folk Music”. I think OPM gave Catherine’s songs a little more dimension and openness to the traditional
folk style. It was our first Open Path Music project. Gordon Stevens, Lee Ray, Scott Sorkin and myself played,
arranged and produced. I think a lot of interesting music came out in the development of Catherine’s project. It was my first time diving
into creating and using sound samples. I’m very pleased with what we created. Recorded and mixed at Open Path Music
studios. Gary Mankin and Nelson Braxton engineers.
Still Waters
All I did on this piece was write the chord progression at the chorus. Lee Ray did the rest. I wanted to include this song because it’s just
really beautiful. I picture two young girls in the deep south, sitting on a porch in there summer dresses singing this song.. All the sounds
on this piece are samples except acoustic bass, big drum and vocals. Also, Wendy Waller
sang a beautiful background vocal.
Garden Gates
I co-arranged this piece with Lee Ray. Lee came up with a great keyboards, vibes and ambient sounds. Drummer,
Wally Schnalle helped us with the basic drum pattern. I wrote the basic bass line in which
Brad Russell made it into music. I played guitars and added the drum samples to the basic beats. I think this tune
really kicks!
Meet Me At The River
I co-arranged this piece with Lee Ray. Lee wrote and arranged the piano part and I arranged the rest of the music. I really like the horns
and B-3 sound together.
Selkie
I co-arranged this piece with Lee Ray. It was the first time that I started using samples. Some of the samples I recorded myself. Like
the Pacific ocean off the coast of Humboldt, CA. I started out by detuning Catherine’s voice. The sound seemed to have a monk like quality.
I wrote the chord progression to the chorus and Lee Ray developed it into an incredible sounding choir. All the vocal sounds you hear come from
Catherine’s voice!
Be Still
A very pretty folk ballad. Scott Sorkin plays acoustic guitar and I played electric guitar.
*out take Mother Mary
I had done the arrangement and played guitar. But as the project progressed Catherine wanted a more intimate setting with piano and vocal.
You won’t hear this piece on the CD.
